Commonly Abused Drugs

Marijuana and THC

Marijuana is the most used illicit drug in the United States. The effects are caused by THC which acts on brain cell cannabinoid receptors.

Inhalants

Inhalants are substances that the user beaches in the vapors. Intoxication is short lasting up to 30 minutes for most inhalants.

Opioids

Opioid addiction is characterized by a strong, compulsive urge to use the drug, even when it’s no longer deemed medically necessary. Unfortunately, even when someone innocently takes the drug as prescribed.

Benzodiazepine

Benzodiazepines are a depressant drugs that are commonly prescribed to treat anxiety, insomnia, panic attacks, and other nervous system disorders.

Methamphetamines

Meth is used both legally and illegally. When used legally, meth, under the brand name Desoxyn, is prescribed for patients with severe attention deficit disorder, obesity, and narcolepsy.

Heorin

Heroin enters the brain rapidly, attaching to opioid receptors on cells, particularly those involved in feelings of pain or pleasure, heart rate, sleeping, and breathing.

Bath Salts

Commonly known as “bath salts,” synthetic cathinone is a  human-made stimulant chemically related to cathinone, a substance found in the khat plant. Bath Salts usually take the form of a white or brown crystal-like powder, and the effects are highly unpredictable.

Cocaine

Cocaine (aka coke, blow, crack, or coke) is a strong stimulant mostly used as a recreational drug with a very high addiction potential. It is commonly snorted, rubbed on gums, or dissolved in water and injected into the veins.

Club Drugs

Club Drugs tend to be drugs commonly used at clubs, bars, concerts, parties, and other nightlife venues. These substances include GHB, Rohypnol® (aka roofies), ketamine, MDMA (aka Ecstasy), Methamphetamine (aka meth), and LSD.
